Who Was Aldro Thompson Hibbard?

Hibbard was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts in 1886 and trained in Boston, at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and then the Museum School under Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson — the heart of the Boston School. A traveling scholarship took him through Europe before the First World War.

In 1920 he settled in Rockport on Cape Ann and became the central figure of its art colony: a founder and longtime president of the Rockport Art Association, a teacher whose summer classes drew students for decades, and by all accounts the town’s most beloved painter. He was also a genuine baseball man — a semi-professional player in his youth who organized and managed the town team for years.

But the paintings that made his name were made in winter, in Vermont. From his base in Jamaica, Vermont, he painted the West River valley’s snow, sun, and shadow directly from nature, hauling his easel into the drifts. He died in 1972, with work in major museums and a colony that still bears his stamp.
