Who Was Ed Mell?

Mell was born in Phoenix in 1942, grew up around his family’s downtown garage business, and trained as a designer — Phoenix College, then the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. New York followed: a successful 1960s-70s run as an advertising art director and illustrator with major accounts.

A summer teaching art on the Hopi reservation at Hotevilla in 1970 turned him around. He moved home to Phoenix in 1973, and the desert he had grown up ignoring became his subject: first in tight, hard-edged canvases, later in a looser, still architectural style, always built on the designer’s bones.

Landmark public commissions — including the towering Jack Knife bronze of a bronc and rider in Scottsdale — and decades of sold-out gallery shows made him an Arizona institution. He died in Phoenix in February 2024, working nearly to the end.
