Who Was James Bama?

Bama was born in New York City in 1926, grew up poor in Washington Heights, and drew his way out — the High School of Music & Art, the Art Students League under Frank Reilly, and then two decades at the top of American illustration: movie posters, Sports Illustrated, and the sixty-two Doc Savage covers that made him a cult figure.

In 1968 he and his wife Lynne left for Wyoming, and the illustrator became a painter with a documentary mission: the working and remembered West, painted from his own photographs of real people met at rodeos, rendezvous, and reservations, every pore and rivet honored.

His gallery shows sold out on opening day for decades, and his work entered the major Western museums. He painted into old age at Wapiti, outside Cody, and died in 2022.
