Who Was Karl Priebe?

Priebe was born in Milwaukee in 1914 and trained at the Layton School of Art and then the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1938. His first job was not in art at all: he worked on the anthropology staff of the Milwaukee Public Museum, an apprenticeship in close looking that never left his painting. In 1941 he won the Rome Prize, one of the highest honors available to a young American artist; the war made the trip to Europe impossible, and he stayed home and painted.

What a home it was. Priebe’s Milwaukee studio was a gathering place for the circle now called the Wisconsin magic realists — his lifelong friend John Wilde, Sylvia Fein, Marshall Glasier, and Dudley Huppler — and his friendships ran far beyond Wisconsin. He corresponded for years with the photographer Carl Van Vechten, and he counted Billie Holiday, Pearl Bailey, Langston Hughes, and Dizzy Gillespie among his friends at a time when few white Midwestern painters moved in that world at all.

He kept painting birds — drawn from long afternoons at the Milwaukee County Zoo — and people, until the end. His final exhibition, more than a hundred works at Marquette University, opened in February 1976; he died in Milwaukee that July.

What Did Priebe Paint?

Priebe’s signature works are small, intense panels in gouache and related opaque watermedia: single birds — plovers, herons, exotic species — standing in moonlit, half-dreamed landscapes, and portraits, many of Black subjects, painted with a directness rare for his time and place. The surfaces are matte, saturated, and precise.
