Who Was Ludwig Bemelmans?

Bemelmans was born in 1898 in Meran, then Austria-Hungary, to a Belgian father and German mother, and had a chaotic European childhood he later spun into comic gold. Sent to America at sixteen, he worked his way up through New York’s grand hotels — years at the Ritz-Carlton that furnished a lifetime of stories.
