Who Was Maynard Dixon?

Dixon was born in Fresno, California in 1875 to a family of ruined Confederate gentry, and drew from childhood — at sixteen he mailed sketches to Frederic Remington and got back encouragement he never forgot. Largely self-taught after a brief art school stint, he became San Francisco’s leading illustrator of Western life.

The 1906 earthquake burned his studio; New York illustration paid well but curdled — he came to despise the fake West the magazines wanted, and in 1912 he returned to California for good, painting murals and canvases and traveling the deserts of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah with a sketch easel. His marriage to the photographer Dorothea Lange ran through the Depression years, when his art turned briefly, powerfully social.

From the 1920s his mature style crystallized: simplified masses, enormous skies, the “Cloud World” of his most famous canvases. Tuberculosis pushed him to Tucson winters; he died there in 1946, his ashes buried on a Utah mesa at Mount Carmel.
