What the Handicraft Guild Made

The Handicraft Guild of Minneapolis was founded in 1904 by a group of women, most of them teachers, and ran until about 1918. It was a working craft school and a production workshop at the same time, covering metalwork, pottery, jewelry, leather and bookbinding.

Marks

Guild work is usually marked with an impressed or applied device, and a good deal of it is not marked at all. Attribution on unmarked pieces rests on form, patina and provenance, which is exactly the sort of judgement that benefits from being looked at by someone who has handled a quantity of it.

Photograph the base or the reverse, and photograph any paper labels before they are removed. On copper, do not clean anything before it is assessed. Original patina is part of the value and it cannot be put back.
