Description

The subject of this painting with meticulous brushwork is the THREE CHIVALRIES. The artist Ye Mansu was a well-known painter of the late Qing-Dynasty and Republican period. The painting was completed in Shanghai in 1939. It was slightly harmed in the Cultural Revolution (please look at the stain caused by a footprint on the upper-left edge and the purple ball-pen scribbling left to the lady in the photos), and was remounted on paper backing later. Fortunately, it escaped being damaged. The theme is from the story about the three Dust Chivalries in the Wind at the end of the Sui Dynasty. The young man was Li Jing, who aided in forming the Tang Dynasty. The young lady was Red Duster, who fell in love with Li Jing and eloped with him. The Bearded Warrior helped their elopement.
