Who Was Thomas Hill?

Hill was born in Birmingham, England in 1829 and came to America as a boy; he trained as a carriage and ornamental painter before studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His early landscape career was Eastern — the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where he painted alongside the leading names of the day.
