Giovanni Battista Rasmusio (1485-1557) and Giacomo Gastaldi (1500-1566), “La Nuova Francia,” Venice, 1606. Woodcut map depicting the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada from New York Bay to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. New York harbor is depicted in some detail, and Manhattan is shown as a peninsula called “Angoulesme.” The sea is teeming with ships and sea monsters, and the land is filled with flora and fauna as well as detailed vignettes of Native Americans and settlers.
