Pieter Goos Map of California as an Island

This rare 17th c. map depicts a historical quirk from the age of exploration: it depicts California as an island. This cartographic phenomenon began with an inaccurate account published in the early 16th c. and appeared in maps of the area until the mid 18th c. This map is a beautifully executed artifact of this era, where the fantasy surrounding California made its way into cartographic reality.
