Are Charles Wysocki prints worth anything?

Charles Wysocki prints are in fact valuable, though there is a significant range in value from $1,000 down to $10.00. Some of his prints are worth much more than others. The key factors are whether it is signed and numbered, the medium (paper vs. canvas), and the subject of the print. Several of his images are worth much more than others. We have included a comprehensive list of his known prints below.

How much is a Charles Wysocki painting worth?

The value of your Wysocki painting or print is built upon several factors which range from size to condition to style. Print or Painting?
The first step in narrowing down the value of your Charles Wysocki is to establish if it is a print or a painting. Wysocki was incredibly prolific, and his work was licensed for everything from calendars and puzzles to cookie tins.

  • Originals: These are typically oil or acrylic on canvas or masonite. You will be able to see raised brushstrokes and texture. These are rare and can sell for $10,000 to over $100,000.
  • Prints: Most people own offset lithographs or giclees. If you look at the image under magnification and see a matrix of small uniform dots, it is a print. Wysocki signed and numbered many of his limited editions, so if you see 350/1500 or numbers like this in the lower left or right corner, you have a limited edition print.

Subject matter
Charles Wysocki is the master of “Americana,” but his body of work covers specific themes. From a value or resale perspective, the works that maintain the best value usually fall into two categories: Classic Americana (horse buggies, snowy New England villages) and Cats (especially his “sleeping cat” library series like Frederick the Literate). The cat prints often command a premium due to high demand from collectors.

Signed and Numbered
Wysocki’s body of prints can be divided into two groups: Limited (numbered) editions and “Open editions”. Open editions are neither signed nor numbered and were often mass-produced for decor. These are extremely common and worth very little (often under $25). Limited editions, especially those hand-signed in pencil by Wysocki before his death in 2002, hold significantly higher value.

Size and Medium
The largest prints tend to draw the biggest prices. Additionally, in his later years and posthumously, Canvas Giclees were released. These look very similar to original paintings and often hold value better than paper prints because they are more durable and visually impressive.

Condition
This may seem obvious but condition is key. Currently in the market, there is almost no tolerance for Wysocki prints that are faded (common with older prints exposed to sunlight), water-damaged, wrinkled, or trimmed to fit a frame.
