Large David Gilhooly Ceramic Frog Sculpture

David James Gilhooly III (American, 1943-2013). Large and heavy ceramic sculpture depicting a whirlwind of frogs stacked atop each other with large, blue feet extending upwards from the top. Known as a pioneer of the Funk art movement, he also was easily recognized for the recurring frog motif that continued in his art for much of his career. Initially explored in his series “FrogWorld,” which reimagined major historical and biblical events with frogs taking the place of humans, the frog motif carried on, as is evident in the present work. Height: 29 x diameter: 21 in. Weight: 123 lbs.
