Pierre Duval Nova Mexico Map ca. 1660 California as Island
Pierre Duval (1618-1683), “Nova Mexico,” Nuremberg, ca. 1660-1680. This rare map depicts California as an island, based on Sanson’s depiction, along with the surrounding areas of Mexico and what is now New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and parts of Idaho and Oregon. This map shows the edge of the French territory, labeled “Canada ou Nouvelle France,” along with more fanciful place names, including Cibola, the mythical seven cities of gold.
