Toland Sand

Toland Sand does not blow glass. He builds it — laminating sheets of optical and dichroic glass into a block, then cutting, grinding and polishing that block until it becomes a prism that collects and redirects light. The results look less like vessels than like small pieces of engineering: cubes, pyramids and split geometric forms with colour buried deep inside them that changes as you move.

Who Was Toland Sand?

Sand was born in 1949 and has worked for decades out of New Hampshire, well away from the hot-glass centres in Seattle and North Carolina. That distance is part of why his name is less familiar than his work deserves: he is a cold-glass artist in a field whose public image is furnaces and blowpipes.

The method is patient and unforgiving. Sheets of optical glass, some of them coated with the thin metallic layers that make dichroic glass shift colour by angle, are laminated into a solid block. Everything after that is subtraction — sawing, grinding through progressively finer abrasives, and polishing to an optical finish. There is no rescuing a mistake at the last stage, and the finished surfaces have to be flawless or the illusion collapses.

What Does Toland Sand Make?

The recurring forms are geometric: cubes and split cubes, pyramids, discs and tapering vertical shapes, most of them small enough to sit on a desk and heavy for their size. Titles like Transcendental Cube and Dichroic Revelation give a fair sense of the intent. Inside each one, laminated layers read as coloured planes that appear to float, and the dichroic coatings shift from one colour to its complement as the viewer moves.

Because the work is cold-built rather than blown, it sits alongside artists like Jon Kuhn and Christopher Ries rather than the vessel-makers — a distinct and quietly competitive corner of the field, collected by people who care about optics and precision.

Only around ten salerooms nationally have handled his work in recent years, and his recent median has been running above his longer-run average.
