Gibson Byrd (Shawnee, 1923-2002). Oil on canvas painting titled “The Monument” depicting figures walking away from a statue, 1956. Signed and dated along the lower left. With a Milwaukee Journal 75th Anniversary Award slip affixed to the verso. Byrd was a Shawnee painter and teacher at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He was a contemporary of other prominent artists including Aaron Bohrod, Warrington Colescott, Raymond Gloeckler, Walter Hamady, Harvey Littleton, Alfred Sessler, John Wilde, and Santos Zingale.
